The answer is C.
- Each row uses the same three pointer angles, once each. The last row has no pointer at 45 degrees yet, so the missing cell's pointer is at 45 degrees.
- In each row, every cell has shapes of the same size, so the missing cell's shapes are medium.

What do you get when you finish the IQ test?
You get your estimated IQ, a 90% range around it and your percentile. You also see a plain name for your score band and how you did on each kind of question. A short note explains what the result can and cannot tell you.
After the result, you can review each question in turn, at no cost. You see your answer, the right answer and why it is right. You can also save your result as an image, or make a share link that shows your score, range and percentile, but not your answers.
Here is a real result from our engine. It shows the same parts your result will show.
- Estimated IQ
- 103
- 90% range
- 91 to 115
- Percentile
- Around the 58th
- Score band
- Average
- Correct answers
- 19 of 30
By question type:
- Pattern matrices: 6 of 12, weaker than the overall level
- Number and letter series: 5 of 6, stronger than the overall level
- Shape rotation: 2 of 4, about the overall level
- Logic: 3 of 4, about the overall level
- Quantitative problems: 3 of 4, about the overall level
What this means. This result is in the average band, where about half of all people score. Average is a normal, typical result.
A printer prints 8 cards in 4 minutes. At the same rate, how many cards does it print in 7 minutes?
- Your answer
- B: 16 cards
- Correct answer
- E: 14 cards
Why
It prints 8 / 4 = 2 cards each minute.
In 7 minutes it prints 2 x 7 = 14.
The answer is E: 14 cards.
How is the score worked out?
Your score is worked out from which questions you got right and how hard each one was. Questions near your own level tell the model the most; the easiest and hardest ones for you add less.
We use a published scoring model from test science, called an item response model. For each question, it gives the chance of a right answer at each level of ability. It also allows for lucky guesses. The model then finds the level that best fits all of your answers.
This is why two people with the same number of right answers can get different scores. The one who solved the harder questions gets the higher estimate. Your result still shows how many you got right, so nothing is hidden.
That level is turned into an IQ. On this scale, 100 is the middle and 15 points is one standard deviation. That is the same scale most modern tests use.
Why do we show a range?
We show a range because no test can pin a person to one exact number. Every score has some measurement error. A short test has more of it than a long one.
So your result comes with a 90% range. On our test today, a result of 100 usually comes with a range of about 88 to 112. Clinical tests report a range too, only a narrower one, because they are much longer.
Our methodology page shows every step, including how precise the test is at each level.
What does the test contain?
The test contains 30 questions of five kinds, and you have up to 25 minutes. Every question is new, generated for your attempt and checked by software to have exactly one right answer. You need no special knowledge. Everything you need is on the screen.
- 12 pattern matrices. Find the missing piece of a grid of shapes.
- 6 number and letter series. Work out the rule and find what comes next.
- 4 shape rotation. Pick the shape that is the same one turned around.
- 4 logic questions. Decide what must be true from a few statements.
- 4 quantitative problems. Solve a short everyday problem with numbers.
Pattern matrices get the largest share. Research on matrix tests found that higher scorers find abstract rules more easily and hold more goals in mind at once.
Here is one example of each kind. None of them ever appears in a live test.
Example: pattern matrices
Which option completes the pattern?
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: A.
In each row, every cell has the same fill, so the missing cell is empty.
In each row, the pointer stays at the same angle, so the missing cell's pointer is at 0 degrees.
Everything else stays the same in every cell.
So the answer is A: one medium empty square, a pointer at 0 degrees.
Example: number and letter series
Which number comes next?
Series: 6, 12, 24, 48, 96, then a missing term.
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: C.
Each term is the one before multiplied by 2.
So the next term is 96 x 2 = 192.
The answer is C: 192.
Example: shape rotation
Which option is the given shape turned around, without flipping it over?
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: B.
Option B is the given shape after a quarter turn clockwise.
Options C, D and E are mirror images. No amount of turning makes a mirror image match, because it would have to be flipped over.
Option A has one square in a different place, so it is a different shape.
Example: logic
Assume each group has at least one member. If both statements are true, which conclusion must also be true?
- No snigs are brenks.
- All brenks are quobs.
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: D.
Only the two statements count, even though the words are made up. Each group has at least one member.
All brenks are quobs, and no brenks are snigs. So the brenks are quobs but not snigs, which means some quobs are not snigs.
The other options can be false even when both statements are true, so they do not have to follow.
The answer is D.
Example: quantitative problems
A machine makes 20 tokens in 5 minutes. At the same rate, how many tokens does it make in 10 minutes?
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: B.
It makes 20 / 5 = 4 tokens each minute.
In 10 minutes it makes 4 x 10 = 40.
The answer is B: 40 tokens.

What does your score mean?
Your score tells you how your result compares with other people. The middle of the scale is 100, and about half of all people score from 90 to 109.
| Score range | WISC-V wording | Traditional wording (WAIS-IV) | Share of people |
|---|---|---|---|
| 130 and above | Extremely High | Very Superior | 2.5% |
| 120 to 129 | Very High | Superior | 7.2% |
| 110 to 119 | High Average | High Average | 16.6% |
| 90 to 109 | Average | Average | 49.5% |
| 80 to 89 | Low Average | Low Average | 15.6% |
| 70 to 79 | Very Low | Borderline | 6.5% |
| 69 and below | Extremely Low | Extremely Low | 2.1% |
Your result also gives a percentile. It is the share of people who score lower than you. A percentile of 75 means you scored higher than about 75 in 100 people. It is not the percent of questions you got right.
The two systems use different words for the same scores. We always name the system, so the labels are never mixed up. Our IQ scale explains every band in detail.
Every whole score from 70 to 160 has its own page. A score of 100 sits exactly in the middle, as what a 100 IQ means explains. A score of 115 is one standard deviation above it. See what a 115 IQ means for its percentile and rarity. A score of 130 is at the 97.72nd percentile. Our page on a 130 IQ covers it.

What can an online IQ test tell you, and what can it not?
A careful online test can give you a provisional estimate of your reasoning, with a range around it. It cannot give you a clinical score, a diagnosis or entry to Mensa.
Here is what our test does well. It measures reasoning on five kinds of puzzle. It shows an estimated range around every score. It is most precise in the middle of the scale, where most people score.
Here is what it cannot do:
- It does not measure vocabulary, memory or processing speed. A full clinical test, such as the WAIS-5, covers all of these.
- It cannot tell very high or very low scores apart well. We print no number below 70 or above 145.
- It is taken without a supervisor. Unsupervised online tests score about 3 IQ points higher than supervised ones, on average.
- It cannot replace an assessment for school, work or health reasons.
Our guide on whether IQ tests are accurate goes into each of these points.
How do you take an IQ test?
You take it in one sitting, alone and without help, at a time when you are rested. Set aside up to 25 minutes of quiet time. Work steadily, and skip any question that stalls you. You can come back to it later. Answer every question in the end, because a blank counts as wrong.
Take your first attempt seriously. Scores tend to rise a little on each retake, so your first result is the fairest one.
Where can you take an IQ test?
You can take a free IQ test online, like the one on this page, for an estimate. For a formal score, a licensed psychologist gives a full test in person. Our guide to how much an IQ test costs explains the routes and prices.
For Mensa, only a supervised test counts. Our Mensa IQ test page explains how to take one. For a child, start with our IQ test for kids guide for parents.
What do we promise?
We promise that the whole test, your result and every explanation stay free. A common complaint about online tests is a small fee to see the result. Then a monthly charge follows that the person did not expect. We do the opposite.
- No paywall, no card and no subscription. Nothing is for sale here, now or later.
- No email and no account. You never need to sign up to see your result.
- No ads inside the test. Ads never appear on the test, on your result or in the answer review.
- No tracking of who you are. Our database never stores your IP address. Nothing at all is stored if you say you are under 13.
Are there brain games too?
Yes. Next to the test, there are short brain games for memory, speed and focus. Each one gives a score and keeps your best on your device. They are for fun, and none of them is an IQ test. The brain games page explains what each one measures.
Frequently asked questions
How can I test my IQ for free?
You can test your IQ for free with the test at the top of this page. Press start, answer the questions and see your result at once. There is no fee at any step.
How long does the test take?
The test takes up to 25 minutes. A timer shows the time left. When it runs out, your answers so far are scored.
Is this IQ test really free?
Yes. The test, the full result and every explanation are free. We never ask for a card, an email or a subscription. Once ads are switched on, ads on our reading pages will pay for the site. They are kept off the page with the test, the result and the answer review.
Is the result accurate?
The result is a provisional estimate, and its range shows how far it can move on a short test. Our scoring model has not yet been checked against real test takers. It is most precise near the middle of the scale. It is less precise far from 100, because a short test has fewer hard and easy questions to go on.
Can I take the test again?
Yes. Each attempt has new questions. But scores tend to rise with practice. A large review found no further gain after 3 attempts. So your first result is the fairest.
Is the test for adults or children?
The scored test is for adults, and it compares you with adults. It is not a way to measure a child’s ability; a child’s score only means something next to other children of the same age. Parents can find how children are assessed in our guide for parents. If someone chooses the under 13 age group anyway, nothing is sent to us or stored.
What is a good IQ score?
The scale does not grade people; it places a result among other people’s results. The average band runs from 90 to 109, and about half of all people land there. Scores from 110 up are above the middle, and scores under 90 below it. One number never sums up a person.
What happens to my answers?
Your answers are kept as an anonymous record, with no name, email or IP address. We use them to improve the scoring. Raw answers are deleted after 24 months. Our privacy policy explains every detail.
Can this test get me into Mensa?
No. Mensa accepts only approved tests taken under supervision. It does not accept any online test for admission. Our test can show you where you might stand, but it cannot qualify you.
Is this site linked to Mensa or a test publisher?
No. IQ Score Level is independent. It is not affiliated with Mensa, with any test publisher or with any association of psychologists. You can read who runs it on our about page.
